All too often off-the-shelf plugins create business pain

There are powerful reasons to get a custom plugin developed for your website. Whilst solutions from the WP library can be a quick functionality fix. There is almost always a business cost, as one size does not fit all.

We find that your business pain points are:

  • Unnecessary Workarounds: We often see businesses adapting their processes to fit the limitations of a plugin. Instead of the software supporting the business, the business ends up supporting the software. A custom version allows the functionality to follow your workflow, rather than forcing you to change how you operate.
  • Slow Performance: Third-party plugins can introduce redundant code that gets loaded on every page. More code = more to download = slower loading of pages. We're talking extra CSS for styles (that often don't match your brand). And extra Javascript for on-page functionality. For example, a custom lightbox gallery can really punch a hole in your page load speed stats. You may only use it on your case study pages, but behind the scenes it's loaded for every page, including highly important landing pages. They may also introduce heavy database querying, further slowing down your site. Slow loading pages, lead to lower conversion rates and a knock to your search engine rankings.
  • Poor Accessibility: Websites need to be accessible for those with a disability. They need to be coded in a way that screen-readers can easily understand and limited-vision users can use. Poor quality code can introduce accessibility issues. It's a big problem. This negatively affects your customers' experience, and will also affect your SEO efforts.
  • Hampered SEO: High performing SEO is the elixir of digital marketing. But results can be hampered by slow-loading sites that aren't accessible.
  • Poor Security: Plugins can also introduce security risks. Poor maintenance or poor code can create vulnerabilities that attackers may exploit. This is particularly true where plugins are no longer actively maintained or regularly updated.
  • Reduced Upgradability: You need to be able to upgrade the core functionality of your WordPress site. It's essential for security and also good to enjoy new WP features. Many devs have lost interest in their plugin, abandoning them; i.e. not keeping it up-to-date and in line with the WP core updates. You're left to find another version if you want to keep your site up-to-date, or pin your site to an older WP version so the software continues working.
  • Off-Brand: Off-the-shelf UIs don’t take into account your branding. Unless it has options for configuring fonts, padding, border colours etc. They can make your site look like a mish-mash of elements. Inevitably, this can affect conversion rates by reducing trust.

All the above are going to impact your profitability. Your website should be working for you, not against you. That's where we come in.

Plugins done right

We develop plugins that add business value, not drawbacks. We've been programming for some 30+ combined years. We don't outsource any code, so you're always dealing with the dev that writes your system. Our aim is simple: you get a plugin that does exactly what you want it to do, and looks exactly how you want it to look.

We specialise in:

Fast Loading Web Pages

Ensuring that your project uses the minimal amount of code and is accessible. For example, if we were developing a light-box gallery. We'd only load related code on pages where it's used. And if the gallery is below the screen threshold, then we'd only load its code when the user scrolls. It's this attention to detail that ensures we have fast-loading web pages.

High Accessibility Standards

We ensure that any on-page elements use the correct HTML tags and attributes, ensuring high accessibility. We're sticklers when it comes to colour contrast, taking care that any colour palettes don't trigger any "Background and foreground colours do not have a sufficient contrast ratio." flags.

Security

We want to ensure that your site is robust and free of opportunities for hackers. Especially when it comes to SQL injection, cross-site request forgery, data validation and permission management.

Design and UI

We have strong design skills, so expect any frontend related plugins to be on-brand with common-sense UI patterns. Our preferred CSS library is Bootstrap 5 but we're happy to code CSS from scratch.

Best Practice Hosting

It's important for any serious development to have the correct setup. This means a development environment where we can write our code. A staging environment where we can test the outputs of our development. And a production environment, where your live website lives.

We're happy to advise on hosting too. For business-critical websites we typically recommend managed hosting with staging and production environments. This provides a safer workflow, easier testing and better rollback options.

SEO

Unlike many developers, we have a strong background in technical SEO. This means performance, accessibility and search visibility are considered throughout development. We don't just want your code to function correctly; we want it to support your wider marketing objectives too.

AI

We use AI, but we keep it within our best-practice rails. Examining the code that it creates and questioning its relevancy.

Technical But Jargon-Free

We're also jargon-free, making us easy to work with. We ensure you fully understand all aspects of any development work. All projects start with an easy-to-understand specification based on your exact needs. That becomes our blueprint to work from.
